(1 or more sessions per year)
Lomé (Togo)
Dakar (Sénégal)
Cotonou (Bénin)
Niamey (Niger)
Provide expert training Banking and Financial risk management from 2013 to 2017, as the Region was gradually preparing for and implementing international Basel 2 & 3 standards. Some training sessions were specifically focused on Operational Risk and Internal Controls
In 2018, in preparation for the go-live of the region’s new risk management and capital adequacy regulations, I initiated a change in the training format.
Increase the number of beneficiaries, with a fundamental risk management session provided to 60-80 participants coming from all eight BCEAO countries and banks
Focus on regional implementation topics and issues, with a second training session of around forty participants, selected among those who had successfully passed the fundamentals exam. This second session provided practical use cases reviews, methodologies and exercises
Fully engage participants in their learning process, by splitting them into working groups, and having them prepare a presentation on a topic of their choice but in line with their organisations’ current risk management needs & issues. Coaching was provided to all work groups (online support + one on-site session)
Finally, each working group had to present their final work and conclusions to their peers as well as their CEOs and Board Presidents in a plenary session (with approximately 80 attendees)
This format was well appreciated by the BCEAO-COFEB, local banks’ executive management and participants, and thus repeated in 2019 and 2020
On a special note, the support provided throughout the entire 2017-2020 training cycle by the BCEAO and their banking regulation and supervision unit was extremely valuable and cannot be under-estimated: very knowledgeable, highly professional, visionary, open-minded and always available despite their busy work schedule
